December is the middle of the summer season in Australia. Those visiting from the Northern Hemisphere will enjoy the warm days and sunny weather that make the Sunshine Coast one of the most popular holiday spots in the country.
What better way to celebrate Christmas than to enjoy the beautiful weather while taking part in local celebrations?
Each of the four sub-areas of the Sunshine Coast offers its own regional venues of Christmas activities.
To set the mood of the Christmas season, take in a presentation of Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio” performed by the Sunshine Coast Choral Society and conducted by Adrian King at Lake Kawana Community Centre on December 7.
Throughout December, each community offers evening carolling.
Christmas Performances At The J Theatre
In the Coolum Beach area, The J Theatre entertainment venue presents an evening of Christmas cheer during its popular Wassail celebration.
The Noosa Chorale creates a Christmas atmosphere at The J with food, beverages and a sing-along of traditional carols on December 18 and 19. The French theme of the 2015 concerts includes a performance of the “Messe de Minuit pour Noël,” a 17th-century Christmas Mass by French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier.
Children 6 to 9 years old will enjoy a special evening of Christmas disco on 22 December at The J. Parents can relax at the café while young ones enjoy a bouncing castle and a DJ playing fun music.
Christmas Shopping On the Sunshine Coast
Christmas shopping is at its best at the Eumundi Markets, the largest arts and crafts market in Australia.
Open Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the year, a special night market is held each Friday in December. More than 600 booths and stalls display locally grown produce and handmade crafts by local artisans. Works range from furniture to jewellery to skincare products.
Children enjoy face painting, rides and other activities. The village and the market sparkle with Christmas lights. Santa pays a special visit each Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. Street performers, live music, outdoor movies and fire shows add to the excitement.
Guests can also enjoy the food fair with cuisine from all over the world. The market is just 21 minutes from Coolum Beach and 22 minutes from Noosa Heads.
Golf This Xmas?
For golfing aficionados, Noosa Heads and Coolum Beach are home to several championship golf links. Twin Waters is the venue of the Sunshine Coast Masters Pro Am Golf Tournament held at four golf courses in the area during December 15 to 18. Amateur golfers can compete with the pros including Peter O’Malley, Wayne Grady and Richard Backwell during the four-day event.
