Pioneering a path to sustainability

Coolum Beach is home to impressive natural beauty, and local businesses are increasingly stepping up to the challenge of becoming more sustainable.

At The Point Coolum, we strive to become a more eco-friendly accommodation provider. Our hotel overlooks the stunning Coral Sea, and this is a constant reminder of what we need to protect and preserve.  We have taken steps to reduce our environmental impact by installing the following initiatives throughout our hotel.

1. Eliminating Plastic Waste

The Point Coolum has bid farewell to plastic water bottles. Instead, guests are treated to the refreshing taste of Sunny Coast Tap Water, sourced locally and packaged in reusable aluminium bottles. Not only is the water of top-notch quality (scoring an impressive 94/100), but the move drastically reduces our plastic pollution.

2. A Fresh Approach to Coffee

The hotel has embraced the sustainable trend of using coffee plungers instead of non-recyclable coffee pods. This small yet impactful change significantly reduces the ecological footprint associated with our guests' coffee consumption.

3. Turning Leftovers into Charity

Waste not, want not – The Point Coolum donates leftover soap to Soap Aid as part of their Hotel to Hands program. These discarded soap remnants are melted down and repurposed, ensuring nothing goes to waste. Similarly, leftover amenities like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and partly used toilet rolls find a new home through donations to a local homeless charity. This thoughtful initiative minimises waste and supports those in need within the community.

4. Transition to Green Cleaning

The hotel has shifted towards natural cleaning products like lemon juice and vinegar, avoiding harsh chemicals such as bleach when it is not a necessity. The Point Coolum actively seeks alternatives wherever possible, aiming for a healthier environment inside and outside its walls.

5. Containers for Change

The Point Coolum has joined forces with Containers For Change to make recycling drink containers much simpler. This partnership aims to improve the recycling rate, and all monies collected from these containers are donated towards a local regeneration program with Reforest, which offsets the hotel's carbon emissions.

So far we have removed more than 21 tonnes of carbon and growing.  You can find out more about this initiative here.

7. Plastic Free Coolum

The Point Coolum is an active Plastic Free Coolum member. With a shared passion for preserving the beauty of Coolum and its surrounding environment, this initiative is close to our hearts.  We also actively support Take 3 For The Sea's ocean clean up program, arranging kids activities to help educate and incenivise them to take action to keep our oceans free of plastic.

6. Moving Towards a Solar Future

The Point Coolum has its sights set on harnessing the sun's power. The hotel plans to install solar power infrastructure across the site in 2024. Reducing its reliance on conventional energy sources and contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

We acknowledge that there is still a long journey ahead to becoming more sustainable and to tread more lightly upon our beautiful landscape. We are encouraged by our guests' support for the eco-friendly practices that we have already adopted. The Point Coolum is not just a future holiday destination, it is also a commitment to a
greener, more eco-conscious world.
